Windshield Repair vs. Replacement: Which Do You Need?

How we decide whether to repair or replace — and why we never push a replacement when a repair will hold.

The most common question we get: do I need a full replacement, or can this be repaired? Here's how we decide.

When a Repair Works

A chip or crack can be repaired if it meets all of these:

  • Smaller than about 6 inches (roughly the size of a dollar bill)
  • Not in the driver's direct line of sight (roughly a 12-inch wide zone in front of the steering wheel)
  • Not at the edge of the glass
  • Only through the outer layer of glass (not both layers)

Chips that qualify can be fixed in about 30 minutes with a resin injection that seals the chip and prevents spreading. The repair is nearly invisible and is usually covered by insurance at zero cost to you.

When You Need Replacement

Replacement is necessary when:

  • The crack is longer than 6 inches
  • The damage is in the driver's line of sight
  • The chip has spread into a crack that runs to the edge
  • The damage penetrates both glass layers
  • There are multiple chips close together
